A treatise on health management: This is a new entrant to the publication world of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publications. The author is Professor S.C. Mohapatra, the well-known community medicine and health management expert. He was a former Professor and Head of Community Medicine of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University and is presently the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary (SGT) University, Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Professor Mohapatra has been working in this area since the last 40 years and has been an expert as well as a consultant to many national and international organizations. The other authors are Ms. Meghkanta is a management expert. She also hods other managemet qualifications from USA including business analyst in management and she is presently working in Illinois, USA. She is also a poet and has three books to her credit. The third author of the book is Mr. Vishwakant Mohapatra who is the Assistant Vice President in Giesecke and Devrient (G&D), India Pvt. Ltd., a software multinational company at Gurgaon, Haryana, India.

The importance of the book is the fact that it is the first health management textbook in India and the beauty of the book is that it is not only based on medical issues but also covers the purely identified management and engineering areas applicable to the health sector. The authors opine that at the higher level, its only “science” irrespective of any components such as health or nonhealth since most health-related issues are nonhealth in origin — be it causation, implementation, or even cure. At all these levels, management is required and has to be implemented as a principle. The authors have contributed their best concepts for medical graduates, postgraduates, planners, and program implementers. For the first time, this book has introduced the concept of organization and tools, and the skill of management in the health sector. This book is an unique book and first of its kind in Health management. This will fill the gap of health management book which was not available in India and will be satisfying the needs of medical graduates, post graduate, planners and programme implementors.

However, the authors have mentioned that 3% babies are born with congenital abnormalities because of the mistakes of God; hence, there could be some issues not addressed or partly addressed in the book. I feel that all these will be readdressed in the second edition and the treatise will be modified and improved. I congratulate the authors for having dared to tap a new area in the health sector.
